The competition, titled “The Labyrinth. One Hundred and Thirty-Eight Design Ideas for the Porto Navile and Manifattura Tabacchi Urban Park,” was a key moment in architectural debate in the 1980s, regarding the redevelopment of the former Manifattura Tabacchi and Porto Navile areas in Bologna.
The city administration announced a competition, titled “Eight Hectares of Greenery and Public Services in the Historic Center,” for the use of the former Manifattura Tabacchi site on Via Riva Reno. This vast 83,000 square meter space was obtained from the state after lengthy negotiations.
The judging panel included professionals and intellectuals such as Pier Luigi Cervellati, Umberto Eco, Paolo Portoghesi, Giorgio Trebbi, and the president of the National Council of Architects, Giancarlo Busiri Vici.
Of the 138 projects submitted, the winning project was that of Ludovico Quaroni’s group from Rome. One of the defining elements and fulcrum of the composition is the “Rotunda of the Tall Trees.”
The high quality of the proposal is evidenced by its winning the first prize for architecture in Berlin. The projects were published in 1985 in the two-volume catalog “Il Labirinto.”
